A couple of reminders...

May 14

We have a couple of things on the run, 7A. It's important that we're staying current with the due dates:

We're in the midst of our geography presentations. The first five that we saw today were great! Please remember that we will continue with the rest after the long weekend. Come prepared.

On Tuesday afternoon, we'll be presenting our plays as well. Have those ready to go.

Also please don't forget to bring in your jump rope for heart forms!

Geography Assignment

This is just a friendly reminder that your geography assignment is due next Thursday. The success criteria has been shared with you on Google Drive. Please ensure that you and your partner are working on this assignment everyday in order to finish it on time. We'll begin presentations next week!

Upcoming Due Dates

Hey 7A,

Keep an eye on some of our upcoming due dates:

Wednesday May 6th - Monologues
Tuesday May 12th - Alternate Ending
Thursday May 14th - Geography Presentation
Tuesday May 19th - Plays

Monologues

Here are some tips, 7A:

Be less than two minutes. Two minutes is more than enough to show your stuff. In fact, the auditors have already made their decision after 30 seconds, maybe even less.

Have a clear objective. You can't just stand there and talk. You have to be actively talking to someone you've imagined, and you must be trying to get something from them.

Try to have a distinct beginning, middle, and end. A beginning: A strong first sentence to capture attention. A middle: Lots of juicy content. An end: A strong finish. When your monologue has structure, the auditors are more likely to remember you.

Contain conflict. Drama cannot exist without conflict. Who wants to see a play about everyone getting along?

The Wanted Poster

A few things to keep in mind:

  • you need to include three plausible traits (that are NOT physical, but personality traits)
  • character traits are supported with direct textual evidence
  • APE strategy is used to fully support your inferences
  • Wanted Poster is accompanied with a supported graphic (poster)\
And remember this is due next Wednesday, April 29th!

All Summer in a Day

Write a story scene that is a continuation of "All Summer in a Day." In your scene, pick up where the author left off: Margot is released from the closet.

Please post your writing to VT for feedback by Thursday.

-Mr. C

P.S. Tomorrow in math you need to complete your tiling pattern using rotations, reflections and translations. Ensure that after it's assigned that you complete it!

March Break

Over the break, please review our Geometry and Measurement unit. There are some great practice questions from pages 58-68 in your work book that you can work on.

On the Monday back -- March 23rd -- we'll be having our unit test. That's a day two and a double period of math. I will be looking at:

  • surface area of right prisms (rectangular/cube) and triangular prisms
  • volumes of right prisms
  • surface area and volume of irregular prisms

Also don't forget that your Breaking News assignment is due midweek when we get back. You may be given one more period to work on it the Monday back but we'll be moving on to our Short Stories unit that week. Please keep in contact with your group and assign roles. I hope to view these after the March Break.

And lastly...enjoy your break!

P.S. Parents: please ensure that your son/daughter has shared with you their results of their geography test, fractions test and article assignment.

Geography Test

So just a heads up that on March 9th we'll be having our first 'Quest.' (It's not quite a quiz and not quite a test)!

We will have a review before our assessment however here's just a heads up on some of the key concepts you'll need to know:

  • Tectonic Plates (and everything that's related to it!)
  • Global Warming (causes and consequences)
  • Climate
    • lines of latitude
    • oceans currents
    • altitude
    • different climate regions (e.g., polar or temperate)
  • How to read and infer from a choropleth map (a different coloured map)
Again, we will be reviewing before then but if you need anything or missed any handouts, don't forget to access dropbox or come see me at recess!

Homework Tab

It's come to my attention that the homework tab hasn't been working properly lately. While I try to solve this problem there is another way to access the homework: click on any of the other tabs (say, for example, 'flipboard'). When it takes you to the flipboard page, click on the URL an replace 'flipboard' with 'homework' and click enter. That will take you to the homework tab and is a temporary solution to the problem!

Drop Box

This is a friendly reminder to parents and students: handouts from class are also posted electronically on our Drop Box account. If for any reason you misplace a reading, download the electronic copies posted there. They are compatible with programs such as Kurzweil.

Tests and Assignments

7A: Please don't forget to share your work (tests and assignments) with your parents! Have them signed and returned.

Parents/Guardians: Encourage your son/daughter to practise the questioning reading strategy at home. Have them access flipboard and read one of the articles related to the physical environment. They can create questions (literal, inferential and evaluative) and answer them in their Thinking Books for extra practise!

So what do I need to be able to do? Ask yourself. Can you:
  • simplify fractions?
  • turn improper fractions into mixed numbers?
  • add and subtract with like and unlike denominators?
  • multiply fractions with whole numbers?
Test is this Monday!

Newspapers

I need all of 7A to do their part and try to bring newspapers in for an activity that we will be doing in literacy.

Please don't forget!

Heritage Minutes

For your Heritage Minutes on either the Komagata Maru or the Anti-Asian Riots, please make sure you...

  • Keep it to 1-2 minutes
  • Add the "A Part of our Heritage" graphic
  • Include different scenes with different angles
  • Add music and sound effects that are appropriate
  • There should be narration at the end
  • Make it real! Add costumes
  • Ensure that it flows and that it makes sense. Did you communicate your message?
  • How impactful and moving is your video?
  • How convincing and appropriate is your acting?
